A gang member was sentenced to life in prison this week for nearly killing a little girl who managed to carry her toddler brother to safety in spite of a gunshot wound in her heart.

Sean Payton, 17, was sentenced to two concurrent life terms by Superior Court Judge Charles Horan, who added another seven years to the sentence for using a firearm.

Zarricor Glassper, 28, an uncle of Payton, was sentenced in December to two life terms. A third defendant, Tony Davis, 24, was acquitted. Payton was convicted in November of shooting Cristal Flores-Anguiano on Feb. 2, 1992, when she was 11. He was also convicted of attempted murder for shooting at rivals in a car.

The girl had her 2-year-old brother, Rafael, in her arms and was running to an ice cream truck when shooting erupted in front of her 84th Street home and she was struck in the heart. She took her brother back to her doorway, told her parents she did not feel good, then collapsed.
