LOS ANGELES : City to Cut Off Traffic Control Funds for 2 Events
The Los Angeles City Council decided this week to pay for traffic control at two prominent Hollywood civic events this year, but to end such waivers in 1994 because of concerns that the budget-strapped city can no longer afford such generosity.
In a move to recover some of the money, the council told organizers of the Hollywood Christmas Parade to attempt to raise $82,000 in the coming months to pay for the traffic costs. The city will pay only if that cannot be done.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic was granted waivers for traffic control for its 1993 season at the Hollywood Bowl but the council said the Philharmonic should pay for the costs next season.
The issue of whether to continue to use city funds to pay for traffic control at civic events came to the fore last month when organizers of the Academy Awards submitted their regular annual request for a waiver. After much debate, the council decided to pay for traffic fees at this year’s Oscars but to end the practice in 1994.
