VAN NUYS : Unlicensed Tax Preparer Fined

A Chatsworth man who promised an undercover agent he would do his taxes for $45 was fined $675 Thursday after pleading no contest to a charge of working as an unlicensed tax preparer.

Edmundo B. Hernandez, 28, also sentenced in Van Nuys Municipal Court to a year’s probation, was targeted by a sting operation conducted by the Tax Preparer Program of the state Department of Consumer Affairs. Posing as a potential client, the agent visited Hernandez’s office in Pacoima in February.

“Taxpayers face serious consequences if their tax returns are improperly done,” Los Angeles City Atty. James K. Hahn said Thursday. “That’s why it’s so important for anyone doing that kind of work to have a state license, which ensures they are qualified and have all the necessary bonding and insurance to protect their clients.”
