SIMI VALLEY : Private Donations Save Fishing Derby

Private contributions to the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District have saved the 18th annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby from the hook.

The popular free event was slated for cancellation because of last year’s state budget cuts, which cost the east county park district nearly $1 million. More cuts are expected in the district’s $7-million budget for next year.

The derby, which attracts about 800 youngsters each year, is scheduled for May 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the lagoon at Rancho Simi Community Park in Simi Valley. Anglers must supply their own gear and bait.

Cash donations totaling $3,250 came from the Simi Valley Kiwanis Club, Simi Sunrise Rotary Club, Simi Valley Hospital and the local electronics firm Datron Inc. The money was used to stock the lagoon with more than 1,400 catfish, said Doug Gale, recreation supervisor.

Awards and prizes also have been donated by local merchants and fishing enthusiasts, Gale said. Only children 15 years and under can participate.
