SIGNINGS ROUNDUP : O’Doherty Signs With CSUN; Beam to Loyola
Shane O’Doherty of Riverside College has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Cal State Northridge, the school announced Friday.
O’Doherty, a 6-foot-11 center, gives the Matadors their first true low-post player in the school’s three years of NCAA Division I competition.
He averaged 6.3 points and 6.3 rebounds last season for a Riverside team that advanced to the final four of the state junior college tournament.
If O’Doherty measures up during fall drills, his presence will allow 6-8 Peter Micelli to move to forward.
In another recruiting development, Ruben Oronoz, a 6-foot-5 swingman from Rancho Santiago College, visited Northridge on Friday.
Oronoz, who also is considering Cal State Fullerton and Eastern Washington, averaged 16.2 points and made 43.4% of his three-point attempts last season.
“He could play either guard or forward in college,” said Dana Pagett, Rancho Santiago coach. “He can shoot.”
Northridge is expected to sign Tom Samson, a 6-6, 220-pound forward from St. John Bosco High, early next week. Samson has given the Matadors an oral commitment.
