BURBANK : New Trash Trucks Purchased by City

Eight new trucks designed to help Burbank speed a shift to an automated trash pickup system have been purchased by the city for $931,000.

Automated trash pickup will begin April 26 for about one-third of the city with six special trucks purchased last year, according to Bob Van Hazelen, fleet and building manager for Burbank’s Public Works Department.

The eight trucks approved by the city council last month will be used to provide the special service to another third of the city, beginning next year.

About $855,000 of the purchase price had been saved out of the city’s refuse rate collections over the past seven years as part of an equipment replacement program, said Ora E. Lampman, the city’s public works director.

The remainder was paid from 1992 bond money, he said.

City workers are displaying new trash barrels to be used in the automated system on the third level of the Media City Center Mall every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents are being provided three color-coded trash cans: black for trash, blue for recyclables and green for lawn trimmings and other green waste.

The trash cans are lifted and emptied by the truck’s hydraulic arm.
