PREP ROUNDUP : Woodbridge Beats Irvine in Boys’ Swimming

Sophomore Sean Moore won two events to help Woodbridge to its first victory over Irvine in a Sea View League boys’ swimming meet Wednesday at Irvine’s Heritage Park.

Moore won the 100-yard butterfly (55.95) and the 100 breaststroke (59.97) for the Warriors (8-1, 6-0), who won, 108-62.

Sophomore Dawson Hughes posted victories in the 200 freestyle (1:46.23) and the 50 freestyle (23.77). Irvine is 6-2, 5-1.

In other Sea View League boys’ swimming:

Newport Harbor 99, Santa Margarita 62--Jason Marsh was a double winner for Newport Harbor, capturing the 200 individual medley (2:19.65) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.79). Brad Pence won the 50 freestyle (24.40), was second in the 100 freestyle (53.13) and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay for the Sailors (4-2).

In the Century League:

El Modena 87, Orange 85--The 400 freestyle relay team of Scott Mitchell, John Montrella, Steve Taylor, and Jason Parker clinched the meet for visiting El Modena (5-4, 3-1), winning in a time of 3:43.12.

Foothill 119, Canyon 57--David Hay, who won the 500 freestyle (5:18.05), also helped Foothill to victories in the 200 medley relay (1:44.52) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.10).

Villa Park 130, Santa Ana Valley 40--Freshman Brian Pharris won the 100 freestyle (52.65) and the 200 freestyle (1:56.71) for host Villa Park (7-2, 3-1). Todd Wines won the 200 individual medley (2:00.89) and the 100 butterfly (54.35) for Santa Ana Valley.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 115, Loara 43--Brandon Chastain, who posted a victory in the 100 butterfly (1:55), helped visiting Esperanza (4-1) to victories in the 200 medley relay (1:52.28) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.48).

In Century League girls’ swimming:

Foothill 91, Canyon 82--Jamie Gaskins helped Foothill to its victory with wins in the 200 freestyle (2:04.54) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.64).

El Modena 93, Orange 71--Heather Burton won the 200 individual medley (2:21.08), and the 500 freestyle, in a Southern Section qualifying time of 5:20.21 for visiting El Modena. Colleen Donald won the 50 freestyle (25.41) and the 100 freestyle (55.21). El Modena is 8-1, 3-1.

Villa Park 127, Santa Ana Valley 16--Darah Ravani won the 500 freestyle (6:06.82) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.18) and Mary Krill won the 50 and 100 freestyles in 27.58 and 1:00.33 for Villa Park (8-1, 4-0). Amber Wines won the 200 individual medley (2:15.45) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.92) for Santa Ana Valley.

In Empire League girls’ swimming:

Cypress 103, El Dorado 65--Drew Leonard was a double winner for El Dorado (2-6, 2-2), winning the 200 freestyle (1:52.7) and the 500 freestyle (5:16.1).

In Sea View League girls’ swimming:

Irvine 98, Woodbridge 73--Wendy O’Brien won the 50 freestyle (25.06) and the 100 freestyle (53.53) for Irvine (6-1-1, 6-0). In the 200 medley relay, O’Brien came from behind on the anchor to lead Irvine to a 1:56.37 win. Woodbridge finished second in 1:56.48. Alice Huszcz won the 200 individual medley (2:20.01) to lead an Irvine sweep. Woodbridge is 8-2, 4-2.

Newport Harbor 97, Santa Margarita 73--Melissa Schutz won the 50 freestyle (26.00), Shannon Sweeney won the 100 freestyle (57.44) and Carey Read won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.77) for Newport Harbor (5-1).

Cypress 208, Loara 228--Ryan Thomas shot three-over 38 for Cypress (5-8, 4-6) at Cypress Golf Club.

In Garden Grove League golf:

Garden Grove 210, La Quinta 219--Dennis Purcell shot a 39 to lead host Garden Grove (5-12, 2-2) to its victory over La Quinta (3-12, 0-4) at the par-35 Willowick.

In South Coast League golf:

Mater Dei 212, Mission Viejo 220--Mike Locascio shot a 41 to lead host Mater Dei to its victory at Western Hills.

El Toro 208, Woodbridge 214--Ben Garner was medalist for El Toro (7-8, 3-4), shooting par 36 at Rancho San Joaquin.

In nonleague golf:

Estancia 214, Western 227--Eric Barnett of Estancia and Tiger Woods of Western tied for medalist honors, each shooting a two-over 38 at Los Coyotes.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Magnolia 14, Savanna 4--David Lopez swept at singles for visiting Magnolia, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Magnolia is 3-2 in league. Savanna is 4-10, 1-4.
