The Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking nominations for the first Clara Barton Awards for Outstanding Women.

Named after the founder of the Red Cross, the awards will be given June 24 to county women who have contributed in the areas of humanitarian service, health care, education and preservation of the environment. In addition, awards will be given for service by a youth group, women’s group or business.

A “Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award” will also be given to a woman “who’s really broken through the barriers--from the bottom up,” said Diane Lawson, a member of the Red Cross board of directors who is helping to organize the awards.

Red Cross President Elizabeth Hanford Dole will speak at the award ceremony, Lawson said.

The Orange County chapter is the first in the nation to create the awards, according to Al Wynder, a coordinator of the awards.

People do not have to be volunteers to be nominated, Wynder said, nor do they need to be involved with the Red Cross.

A panel of women will judge the nominations, which must be made by organizations or businesses rather than individuals.

The deadline for nominations is May 15. Call (714) 835-5381, Ext. 247, for nomination forms and information.
