This time there was no third-game collapse by the Newport Harbor volleyball team, but rather a three-game sweep over Woodbridge.

The Sailors, ranked sixth in Orange County, avenged their only Sea View League loss this season with a 15-12, 15-3, 15-9 victory Tuesday night at Woodbridge.

Newport Harbor (10-3 overall), the defending league champion, remained tied with Irvine for the league lead at 10-1. Woodbridge dropped to 8-7, 8-3.

“It’s great to come in here (to Woodbridge) and get a win,” Newport Harbor Coach Danny Glenn said.

Especially after what happened when the teams met in the first round of league play. Newport Harbor won the first two games before Woodbridge swept the last three.

Tuesday night, the Sailors pulled away from a 10-10 tie to win the first game and dominated in a 15-3 victory in the second game.

“After the second game, I told the kids in the huddle that this was just like last time we played (Woodbridge),” Glenn said.

Different ending, though.

This time, it was Woodbridge that struggled in the third game, finishing with eight unforced errors. Newport Harbor built leads of 10-4 and 13-6 and was never threatened.

Serving also was a key for Newport Harbor. The Sailors had only seven service errors compared to 35 the first time they played Woodbridge.

“Thirty-five serves missed,” Glenn said, “That’s a career high for me as a coach.”

Mitch McCoy led Newport Harbor with 12 kills and Todd Jameson added 10. Dan Thomassen added eight kills and three blocks for the Sailors.

Hani Talebi had 10 kills and Kevin Reid added eight kills and five blocks for Woodbridge.
