COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Truel, Thobe Get Rancho Santiago Past Cypress
Tony Truel hit an eighth-inning home run to start a three-run rally and Steve Thobe got his ninth save as Rancho Santiago beat Cypress, 6-2, in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Tuesday at Cypress.
The victory gave Rancho Santiago (29-6, 14-5 in conference) a 2 1/2-game lead with five games left. The Dons are the three-time defending conference champions.
Truel’s home run, his second, broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth.
Derek Brown hit a two-run single later in the inning against reliever Mike DesRoches.
David Gonzalez had an RBI single in the ninth for Rancho Santiago.
Steve Dolias got a one-out single in the ninth for Cypress but Thobe came in to get the final two outs.
Ryan Hamilton had three hits for Cypress (26-12, 12-8).
Thursday will be a key day for Rancho Santiago as the Dons complete a suspended game with Golden West, then play the Rustlers in a scheduled meeting.
