IRVINE BOXING : Page Dominates His First Bout in a Year
IRVINE — It was clear from early in the first round that James Page had a purpose in his main-event meeting with Danny Perez on Thursday at the Irvine Marriott.
Page, in his first bout in more than a year, made the most of the opportunity, winning a unanimous 10-round decision.
He dominated the fight and the judges’ cards, winning, 98-91, 97-91, and 100-88, in front of an announced crowd of 950.
Perez lost a point in the third and fifth rounds for low blows.
It was also the first time Page had made it past the sixth round.
Page, a welterweight from Pittsburg, Calif., improved to 9-1. Perez of Paramount is 14-4.
Page showed off a quick left jab in the opening round and used it to control Perez. Page flashed the jab to score and keep Perez away from him most of the bout.
The jab inflicted most of its damage to Perez’s right eye, which was nearly shut by the 10th round.
Page seemed uninterested in taking any risks, except early in the seventh. He opened up with a series of combinations that left Perez hanging on.
But as quickly as the outburst appeared, it was gone and Page was back to his conservative but effective style.
Despite the one-sided scores, Perez had his moments. He scored with a pair of late combinations in the fourth and again in the six.
On the undercard:
Ross Thompson of Las Vegas was credited with a second-round knockout when Mario Solorio of Port Hueneme could not continue because of an injury in the semi-main event.
Solorio (11-7) twisted his ankle while throwing a punch. Ross, a welterweight, improves to 5-0.
Sal Tellez, a welterweight living in Anaheim, got his first professional victory when he scored a four-round majority decision over John Turner of Pasadena. Tellez is 1-2 and Turner is 2-6.
