SAN FERNANDO : $1.7 Million Slated for Metrolink Stop

The California Transportation Commission has approved $1.7 million to complete construction of a Metrolink station to serve Sylmar and San Fernando.

Construction of the station on Hubbard Street near 1st Street has been delayed for several months because of stalled real estate negotiations. The station should be completed by July.

The stop is along the Metrolink line that connects downtown Los Angeles to Santa Clarita. Transit officials estimate the additional stop may boost daily ridership on the Santa Clarita route by 200 passengers to 700.

In March, workers began construction of the 5.8-acre stop, which will consist of a canopy, a platform and a 420-space parking lot. Also included is an extension of 1st Street in an effort to increase access to the station.

The funds approved Thursday make up nearly one-third of the $4.45-million expense to purchase the land and build the station. The balance will be paid by the cities of San Fernando and Los Angeles. A proposed $750,000 child-care facility at the stop will be financed through local, state and federal tax monies.
