LOS ANGELES : 30,000 Condoms Handed Out at L.A. Schools
About 30,000 condoms have been handed out to high school students in the Los Angeles Unified School District since distribution began in April, 1992.
Jeff Horton, the only openly gay member of the seven-member school board, said last week that the number was too low.
“We are just moving into changing behavior and persuading (students) that they need to use condoms,” Horton said.
The district’s 49 high schools have been allowed to implement distribution programs in which condoms are given only to students who have parental permission.
