Arcadia : Damaged Motel Reopens

An 87-bedroom Motel 6 damaged in the June, 1991, Sierra Madre earthquake reopened Monday.

The motel, at 225 Colorado Place, has been rebuilt and new furnishings have been installed throughout the facility, said Alice Dalton, motel manager.

City officials say they hope the reopening of the motel will boost the city’s sales and bed tax revenues. They say the Motel 6 is in the middle range of the city’s hotels and motels in terms of revenue generated.

Despite emotional testimony from local hotel managers, the City Council last week approved an increase from 8% to 10% in the city’s tax on hotel rooms. Some hotel managers cited the closure of Motel 6 as the reason for the city’s declining revenues from the hotel bed tax.
