The Houston Rockets’ Hakeem Olajuwon was voted NBA defensive player of the year by a wide margin.
Olajuwon, selected earlier to the NBA all-defensive first team for the fourth time, led the NBA with 342 blocked shots and was first in steals by centers with 150.
Olajuwon received 73 of a possible 98 votes from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.
Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls and last year’s winner, David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs, tied for second with nine votes each.
