Whitaker Wins Decision and Golden Gloves Title

Lance (The Undertaker) Whitaker of San Fernando won the super heavywight title in the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions title Saturday night with a decision over Ed Mahone of St. Louis at Little Rock, Ark.

Whitaker, 21, pummeled Mahone with straight left-right combinations. Mahone, however, did connect with a hard right that forced Whitaker to take an eight-count in the third round.

“I stepped the wrong way,” said Whitaker, who has only 14 fights under his belt. “I went the other way and that’s what happened.

“In boxing, everybody gets hurt. It’s a hurting business.”

Whitaker got even later in the round when he landed a left-right combination that forced Mahone to take an eight-count.

Football

Jim Bonds, former quarterback for Hart High and UCLA, will be the St. Francis offensive coordinator under Coach Bill Redell.

Bonds, 24, was offensive coordinator for Hart’s sophomore team last fall.

Cycling

John Wordin of West Hills finished first among 100 cyclists Saturday in the California State District Cycling Championships in Lancaster.
