The United States routed Russia, 3-0, in the World Team Cup at Duesseldorf, Germany, getting singles victories from Pete Sampras and Michael Chang and a doubles victory from Richey Reneberg and Patrick McEnroe.

Sergei Bruguera won in singles and doubles to lead defending champion Spain past Switzerland, 2-1, and set up a showdown with the United States for the blue group title.

Sampras defeated Alexander Volkov, 7-5, 6-1. He played more steadily than the Russian, who gambled on hitting winners.

“That’s his game,” Sampras said. “He makes it, he doesn’t make it. Today he made a lot of errors, and I played a whole lot better.”

Chang breezed past Andrei Chesnokov, 6-1, 6-4, in the other singles match, and Reneberg and McEnroe beat Volkov and Andrei Olhovskiy, 6-3, 6-4.

In the Swiss-Spanish singles, Jakob Hlasek beat Carlos Costa, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Bruguera won his eighth consecutive singles match at the event by rolling past Marc Rosset, 6-4, 6-1.

South African Wayne Ferreira, the top-seeded player, fought back from a first-set loss to beat unseeded Alex Corretja of Spain, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and advance to the quarterfinals of the Muratti Time ATP tournament at Bologna, Italy.

Lori McNeil was upset in the second round of the Strasbourg Open at France by Sandrine Testud of France, 6-1, 6-3.
