HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Banning Scores in 15th Inning to Beat Taft, 1-0

Maria Chavira scored from second base on a bunt in the top of the 15th inning to give Banning High a 1-0 victory over Taft in a City Section 4-A Division quarterfinal softball game Thursday at Taft.

Julie Kawamoto (15-5) pitched all 15 innings for Taft (15-5), struck out seven batters and allowed only four hits. She also had three hits.

Chavira was safe on an error leading off the 15th and took second on a wild pitch. Lisa Wheeler beat out a bunt and Chavira scored when the Toreadors were slow in picking up the ball.

Taft loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the inning before shortstop Keri Borzello grounded out.

In others high school softball games:

Granada Hills 4, Cleveland 1--The Highlanders scored four unearned runs in the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and advance to next week’s 4-A Division semifinals against Banning. It will be the third consecutive year the Highlanders (15-4) have faced Banning in the semifinals. The two have split the previous two meetings.

Jessica Shapiro struck out 15 and limited Cleveland to three singles.

The Highlanders scored two runs when Tiffany Lanier’s fly ball was misplayed in the fourth inning. Alanna Lentz singled Lanier to third. Lentz stole second and both runners scored when the throw was mishandled and went into the outfield.

Monroe 5, Franklin 3--Melissa Ennis pitched a five-hitter with two strikeouts to lead the Vikings (13-4) to a 3-A quarterfinal victory at Franklin (13-4).

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 17, Hacienda Heights Wilson 1--The Foothill League champion Bulldogs (19-3) showed no respect for the previously unbeaten Wildcats (20-1), advancing to the Southern Section Division III quarterfinals against San Luis Obispo, which defeated Whitney, 12-6.

Three-time Foothill League individual champion Doug Young won all three of his matches, dropping just five games, and Burbank’s No. 2 singles player, Vazghen Zaghiyan also swept his matches.

Burbank’s three doubles teams recorded sweeps as well, and the unit of Brad Warner and Phil Cano lost just one game in three matches.

Nordhoff 10, Atascadero 8--The Frontier League champion Rangers got strong play from No. 1 singles player Steve Tallakson and their top two doubles teams in edging Atascadero (8-9) in a Southern Section Division IV playoff match at the Ojai Valley Racquet Club.

Tallakson, the Frontier League singles champion the past two seasons, lost just one game in three matches, while the doubles units of Cary Biorkman-Justin Zimmerman and Neil O’Brien-Arne Nottbohm also swept all three of their matches.

Second-seeded Nordhoff (18-3) will face Covina, a 10-8 winner over Yucaipa, in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Quartz Hill 13, San Gorgonio 5--Singles players Kenny Park, Yatin Patel and Val Valcarcel swept their matches for the Rebels (19-1) in a Division III second-round playoff match at San Gorgonio.
