BERLIN : AIDS Moves East
The 9th International AIDS Conference convenes in this German city Monday to review scientific and social progress in treating the disease and to share recently acquired knowledge.
Organizers say that more than 7,000 people have preregistered for the conference and that 6,200 abstracts have been received for scientific presentation.
The conference takes place on the edge of former Soviet-controlled Eastern Europe, a region health experts fear has been brought to the threshold of an AIDS epidemic by new openness since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
