Georgetown University alumnus Bill Clinton invited his schoolmates from the Class of ’68 to the White House on Saturday for a star-studded dinner-dance to make up for the graduation party they never had.

Clinton’s class graduated three days after Robert F. Kennedy was shot, and the country was in mourning on the day the 925-member class got its diplomas.

Headlining Saturday’s all-star lineup for the class’s 25th reunion was entertainer Chuck Berry, who had been scheduled to perform at the senior ball that was canceled. Also slated to perform were the Spinners, the Drifters and the Starland Vocal Band.

A giant tent was erected on the White House South Lawn to accommodate 1,200 visitors--600 classmates and their guests. Georgetown spokeswoman Jane Daly Seaberg called that an excellent turnout for a 25th reunion, and said the Class of ’68 always has been particularly active.

The cost of the fete was being shouldered by the guests, who paid $120 a ticket.
