Singer of North Hollywood finished third in the 59-player field and joined Mike Springer of Fresno, Kevin Wentworth of Manteca, Calif., and 16-year-old Ted Oh of Torrance in the Open field. Springer and Wentworth tied for medalist honors at three-under-par 141.

Singer, 27, who worked at Valencia from 1991-92, said he took the job “basically so I could have playing privileges there” and said local knowledge helped in his earning his first Open berth.
