COMPTON : Council Appointment Draws Fire From Latinos
A lame-duck City Council majority has moved quickly to shore up support for mayor-elect Omar Bradley, but members have drawn criticism from Latino leaders in the process.
The newly elected mayor and two council colleagues voted Tuesday to move Bradley into the mayor’s seat immediately, then appointed a Bradley supporter, political newcomer Ronald Green, to serve the remainder of Bradley’s council term, which expires in June, 1995. Bradley, who defeated Councilwoman Patricia A. Moore last week in a runoff election for mayor, was scheduled to take office July 1.
The appointment of Green, 31, stunned many Latino leaders. Bradley had said repeatedly that it was time to have a Latino on the council. Though Latinos make up nearly 45% of the city’s population, none have served on the City Council. But Bradley defended Green’s appointment, saying that the leading Latino candidate, businessman Pedro Pallan, did not have the support of the other council members.
