Otis Spunkmeyer Inc., a fast-growing producer of frozen gourmet cookie dough, has opened a distribution center in Ventura to service its customers in Ventura County and elsewhere. The center will distribute the firm’s products as far north as San Luis Obispo and as far east as Bakersfield.

Spunkmeyer, based in San Leandro, sells frozen cookie and muffin dough in convenience stores and other retail outlets throughout the nation. Most stores selling the dough have Spunkmeyer-manufactured ovens in which customers can bake the items.

The Ventura distribution unit is Spunkmeyer’s 59th, said Chris O’Connor, the firm’s director of property development. He said all the centers are in the United States except for two in Mexico and one in England.

Spunkmeyer has signed a three-year lease, with a three-year renewal option, on the 6,500-square-foot facility on DuPont Street, O’Connor said.

Spunkmeyer began in 1977 as a chain of California cookie stores but got out of that business to concentrate on selling frozen dough in the late 1980s, O’Connor said. “That’s when our real growth started.”

He said the company expects revenue of $150 million this year, rising 38% over last year’s $108 million in revenue.
