DOUBLE OCCUPANCY: It doesn’t seem fair that malls in Oxnard and Ventura have to fight over a Robinsons-May store (B1)--not when The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks has two of them. The Oaks ended up with a Robinsons-May at each end after the Robinson’s and May Co. chains merged in January. Figuring that one of the stores will eventually pull out, The Oaks is trying to land Ventura County’s first Nordstrom store. . . . Problem: You can’t see The Oaks for the oaks. Trees block the view from the freeway, mall officials say, but the city has rejected their plea for bigger signs (B1).

REMEMBERING PAT: Patricia Nixon, who died Tuesday (A1), didn’t come to Ventura County often--the last time was for the 1991 dedication of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library near Simi Valley. But the Nixons remained friends with Thousand Oaks auto dealer Robert Dean Nesen after Pat Nixon’s brother introduced them in 1949. . . . “She was just normal, never tried to push herself in the forefront,” said Nesen, who ran Richard Nixon’s 1968 California campaign. . . . Former county GOP chairwoman Gwen Tillemans, who also knew Pat Nixon, said she “will go down in history as one of our very great ladies.”

ONE OF A KIND: The word unprecedented appears whenever the subject is Thousand Oaks sprinter Marion Jones. Last weekend, Jones won three titles at the California track and field championships, giving her an unprecedented nine state crowns during her high school career. On Tuesday, she was named Gatorade’s national female high school athlete of the year--for a record third straight time (C8).

CRUISE CONTROL: After tonight’s commencement, most Oak Park High School graduates are shipping out to sea. About 90 of the 109 seniors have paid $50 each to take a four-hour cruise from Marina del Rey after the ceremony. “We wanted a sober and safe and controlled graduation night,” parent Geri Sterling said. Another factor: Disneyland, a traditional post-graduation destination, was not available.
