GALLOWS HUMOR: “Dr. Kevorkian . . . Unplugged”? That’s the title of the latest prank record from tiny, Colorado-based Laetrile Records. Done in the style of such old Dickie Goodman novelty hits as “Flying Saucer,” the routine is a mock interview with Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the suicide machine advocate, with clips of various classic songs providing the answers. A sample:

Q: Dr. Kevorkian, why do nurses like your suicide machine?

A: One less bell to answer. . . .

“I thought the title was too funny to pass up,” says G. Brown, the Denver Post pop music critic who created the track under the name Sidney Weldonbugerstein. Brown says that he has not attempted to contact Kevorkian.

Kevorkian’s Detroit attorney, Geoffrey Fieger, tells Pop Eye that Kevorkian would probably approve of the spoof. “As long as it’s in semi-good taste, it’s fair game,” he says. “And Jack’s got a great sense of humor.”

Brown is hoping that the folks at MTV--which claims the “Unplugged” trademark rights--also have a sense of humor. He sent a tape to programming vice president Andy Schuon, with whom he once worked at a Boulder radio station, but an MTV publicist tells Pop Eye that Schuon hasn’t listened to it yet--though he also hasn’t turned it over to the channel’s lawyers.
