NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Burkett, Bonds Rack Up the Numbers; Giants Beat Expos, 10-4
John Burkett became the first 13-game winner in the major leagues and Barry Bonds hit his National League-leading 22nd home run Monday night at Montreal as San Francisco beat the Expos, 10-4.
Burkett (13-2) won his fifth consecutive start, giving up all four runs and scattering 10 hits in seven-plus innings. He struck out four and walked two. Kevin Rogers got out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the eighth, and Jeff Brantley pitched the ninth.
The Giants have scored 40 runs in Burkett’s last four starts.
“It’s just one of those things,” Burkett said. “But, hey, if they give me 10 a game all the way, I’ll take it.”
Will Clark homered for the Giants, going three for five with three runs scored. Willie McGee went four for five, keying a five-run first inning with a three-run double.
“With the kind of team we have, our pitchers can relax and throw the ball,” McGee said. “Everybody’s contributing, everybody’s hitting and when that happens, everybody loosens up.”
Expo starter Mike Gardiner (1-3) was hit for five runs and five hits in one inning.
McGee’s double and run-scoring singles by Royce Clayton and Kirt Manwaring put the Giants ahead in the first.
