Merit Scholarships Given to Seven Area Students

Area students have won the following scholarships:

National Merit Scholarships, awards that range between $250 and $2,000, went to Catherine R. Borden of Marshall High School in Los Feliz, to attend USC; Kevin S. Collins of La Canada High School, to attend UC San Diego; Noel D. D’Angelo of Flintridge Preparatory School, to attend Harvey Mudd College; Sean M. Gaffney of Hoover High School in Glendale, to attend UCLA; Michael Q. Moody of Flintridge Preparatory School, to attend the University of Chicago; Chang-June J. Oh of La Canada High School, to attend Northwestern University; and Robert J. Tucker of Flintridge Preparatory School, to attend Harvey Mudd College.

Adriana Chavez of Glendale, who attends Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, received a Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship of up to $18,000 to pursue a graduate degree in education.

Erik Messal, a student at Occidental College, has received an Edwin, Frederick and Walter Beinecke Memorial Scholarship to fund two years of graduate study in cultural anthropology.

Floyd Alvarado of Glendale, a student at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, received a tool set valued between $2,500 and $3,500 as part of the “Tools for Success” scholarship program sponsored by Miller Brewing Co.

At Glendale Community College, the following students won awards:

Associated Student Body President Chris Guyer of Glendale received the $3,600 J. Lee Gregg Scholarship.

Christopher Mason of Burbank is the runner-up and received $1,500.

Tony Kordis of La Crescenta received the $1,000 John and Virginia Hedlund award.

UCLA Alumni Assn. Community College Transfer Scholarships of $500 were awarded to Araz Marachelian, Bernard Elhaj, Nebil Aydin, Angela Burnett and Mark Siddall.

The Glendale/Foothill Division of California Retired Teachers honored Nancy Bojorquez, Kelly Gardner and Stephanie Pollender with $500 scholarships, and Mary Jane Hibbard and David Duisberg with $1,000 each.
