Center to Celebrate 2nd Year : The Goebel facility in Thousand Oaks, one of the largest in the county, will host an open house next week. An orientation and trips are also planned.

If you have not visited the Goebel Senior Adult Center, one of the largest and most active senior centers in the county, the following events offer a great opportunity to get acquainted with the center’s services and activities.

CENTER TOURS: On Thursday, the public is invited to attend a second anniversary open house between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Also, the center will hold an orientation for newcomers, complete with guided tours and information packets for seniors aged 50 and older, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Thursday, July 22, at the center, 1385 E. Janss Road in Thousand Oaks. For more information, call 497-1639.

ONE-DAY AND EXTENDED TRIPS FOR SENIORS: Registration is filling fast for the following local and extended trips sponsored by the Goebel Senior Adult Center.

* Aug. 3, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: Guided trip along the Malibu coast includes a driving tour of Pepperdine University, shopping at Malibu Country Mart, and a tour of the Malibu Lagoon Museum and the historic Adamson House. Cost of $36 per person includes lunch, tours and bus transportation.

* Aug. 13-24: Tour of Alaska and the Yukon is described in a brochure available at the Goebel Center. Most meals, air fare and airport transfers are included in the cost of $2,999 per person, double occupancy.

* Aug. 19, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.: Bus trip to Idyllwild includes a visit to the former home of the Cahuilla Indians in the Inland Empire. Seniors can enjoy lunch and shop in Hemet, near the San Bernardino National Forest, and visit the new Desert Hills Factory Outlets. Cost of $38 per person includes bus transportation, lunch and tour of Tom’s Farm.

* Oct. 8-17: The cost of $1,549 per person, double occupancy, for this popular Heritage of America trip includes 15 meals, air fare and bus tours of New York, Philadelphia, Amish Country, Gettysburg, Shenandoah Valley, Monticello, Colonial Williamsburg, Washington, the White House and the Smithsonian Institute. A notary public is available at the Goebel Center to notarize documents for seniors on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. A donation will be accepted. For an appointment, call the Senior Concerns Advisors, 495-6250.

RENTER/HOMEOWNER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Now through the last week in August (varies at each site), trained volunteers are available at the following sites in the county to help eligible claimants to prepare request forms to receive California renter/homeowner assistance and/or property tax postponement. The service is free. Most sites offer walk-in service. Some also have service in Spanish, American Sign Language or appointments for shut-ins. To file, claimants must be blind, disabled, or age 62 or older as of Dec. 31, 1992. And their income, including Social Security, must not exceed the limit set by the state. To apply, bring your 1992 income tax returns and proof of disability or age. Renters should bring 1992 rent receipts and the name and address of their landlord. Homeowners should bring their 1992 property tax bill.
