La Mirada : Ordinance Would Ban Display of Porn Magazines

Pornographic magazines could not be displayed in public places under an ordinance tentatively approved Tuesday by the City Council.

The ordinance was drafted after a Norwalk businessman refused to remove sexually explicit tabloids from about 35 news racks he operates in La Mirada. The racks are outside pharmacies and grocery stores at 10 locations easily accessible to children, officials said.

The Norwalk City Council recently approved a law requiring the covers of adult materials to be shielded from public view.

La Mirada officials went a step further. The new ordinance prohibits the display of magazine covers that depict pubic hair, breasts and genitalia.

The ordinance, which is scheduled for a final vote July 19, would take effect in 30 days if approved. Violators would face a maximum $1,000 fine and six months in jail.
