A Newbury Park man accused of stabbing his roommate in the head and neck in a dispute over money pleaded not guilty on Thursday to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Adan Ocampo, 20, stabbed Juan Diaz Tuesday after a struggle, prosecutors said.

“There was some squabble over money and things got a little out of hand,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Steven J. McLaughlin.

Diaz, 34, who suffered stab wounds to the head, throat and neck, was in good condition Thursday at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, a hospital official said.

Ocampo also faces a special allegation that he caused great bodily injury. He surrendered moments after the attack in the home in the 1600 block of Calle Diamonte to East Valley sheriff’s deputies.

Ventura County Municipal Judge Bruce A. Clark scheduled a preliminary hearing in the case for July 29. Ocampo remains in County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
