A 56-year-old man died shortly after a struggle with his 19-year-old daughter, who was trying to choke her mother when police arrived, authorities said.

Investigators were called to an apartment in the 14300 block of Chestnut Street about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and found an unconscious Richard Raymond Barrett on the living room floor, Lt. Mike Schliskey said.

His wife, Cassie Avery, 49, told police that their daughter, Angela L. Barrett, had strangled her father and tried to choke her mother because they had told her to move out of the house, Schliskey said.

Sgt. Mike Mittelstaedt said the parents had argued with their daughter about finances before, but it escalated to a physical confrontation this time.

“They were arguing over money and dad finally said she’s outta there, but she wasn’t going to be put out, so the fight was on,” Mittelstaedt said.

The father had a heart problem, and although Thursday’s autopsy showed some trauma around the neck, the main cause of death was a coronary attack, Mittelstaedt said. Richard Barrett died about 8:30 p.m. at a Huntington Beach hospital.

“His heart just gave out on him during the struggle,” Mittelstaedt said.

When the daughter saw police, she tried to fight them, authorities said. It finally took four officers to subdue her, cuff her hands behind her back and put her in the back of a police car.

She was held without bail at the Orange County Jail on Thursday and was scheduled to be arraigned today on charges of murder and attempted murder, Mittelstaedt said.

Her mother was treated for bruises at the apartment, police said.
