This weekend, South Bay ballet lovers can witness the good that can come of a bicycle accident.

Shirley Kirkes, whose ballet company is scheduled to perform Saturday at Torrance’s James Armstrong Theatre, got her start in dance after she was injured in a bike accident at age 7. Her doctor told her she had to exercise regularly or risk becoming disabled, so Kirkes’ mother enrolled the child in ballet classes.

Kirkes obviously responded well to the therapy. Her resume includes solo tours and professional dance performances on television specials and in the movies. In the 1970s the Los Angeles resident became a full-time choreographer. And in 1988 she founded The Shirley Kirkes Ballet Company, the company scheduled to dance in Torrance on Saturday.

The company plans to present new works including an American Indian ballet, called Creon And Her Shadow, and Jeff’s Dream, a performance that will include tapping and big band music of the ‘40s.
