Lion Center Among 15 Players Selected to Camp

Loyola Marymount center Amy Lundquist, who was named West Coast Conference freshman of the year last season, has been invited to participate in the USA Basketball Women’s Premier Post Program from July 31 through Aug. 4 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The 15-player camp, which is directed by former Olympic and collegiate coach Pete Newell, is for top players who are 6-feet-4 or taller and have completed at least one season of collegiate competition.

The 6-5 Lundquist averaged 11.6 points, eight rebounds and a team-leading 3.4 blocks as a freshman. She also established a Lion record for blocks in a season.

Lundquist, an honorable mention all-state selection as a senior at Frederic High in Wisconsin, also set an NCAA record when she blocked 15 shots against Western Illinois in December.

The South Coast boys volleyball team won a bronze medal Sunday at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Kansas City.

It was the first time that a 14-and-younger team from the South Bay won a medal in the national tournament.

The team, which consists of players from Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach, beat teams from Minnesota, New York, Missouri and California before losing to eventual champion Team Ace of St. Louis in the semifinals.

South Coast was led by Ryan White and Jesse Spring, who were named to the all-tournament squad. The team was coached by Bill Griebenow.

Setter Rick Humphreys of the Loyola Marymount volleyball team will compete in the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival starting Thursday in San Antonio.

The 6-3 Humphreys, who will be a junior in the fall, led Loyola in service aces with 10 and also ranked among the team leaders in assists and blocks last season.

The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department will conduct its beach 3-on-3 Over-the-Line softball tournament from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 31 in Manhattan Beach.

The single-elimination tournament will have four divisions: men’s open, novice, women’s and co-ed. The cost is $40 a team.

Registration is at the department office, 1400 Highland Ave. The deadline is July 28.

Loyola will play host to its annual soccer camp for boys and girls 7 to 17 in weekday sessions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Monday and July 26 in Westchester.

The cost is $200 a session, including lunch and a T-shirt.

The Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring a basketball camp for boys and girls ages 11 to 16 from July 26 through Aug. 13 at Rogers Park in Inglewood.
