Keith Byars became the latest free agent to flee the Philadelphia Eagles for the Miami Dolphins when he signed a two-year contract for an estimated $2.4 million.

Byars, who barely beat Thursday’s deadline for unrestricted free agents to switch teams, is expected to replace retiring fullback Tony Paige.

In Miami, Byars, 29, rejoins four former Eagle teammates--running back Mark Higgs, offensive tackle Ron Heller, defensive tackle Mike Golic and tight end Keith Jackson.

The Eagles agreed to terms with free-agent defensive lineman Michael Carter and said they had agreed to terms with guard Mike Schad and cornerback Derrick Frazier, a third-round draft pick.

Frazier’s deal is for two years and the others are for one year. Terms were not disclosed.

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound Carter earned $1.175 million last year with the San Francisco 49ers.

He will join former 49er Tim Harris in Philadelphia. Harris, 28, signed a three-year contract with the Eagles. A pass-run specialist, he was signed to replace all-pro defensive end Reggie White but was arrested last spring on a drunk driving charge for the second time in 19 months. Harris is seeking to dismiss the charges and could face a league suspension if convicted.

Schad, 29, is beginning his eighth NFL season and fifth with the Eagles.

Frazier, 23, a third-round draft pick, was a three-year starter at right cornerback for Texas A&M.;

The Cleveland Browns signed center Steve Everitt, their No. 1 pick in the draft from Michigan, to a three-year, $3.1-million contract. Everitt, the seventh first-round pick to sign this season, was the 14th selection overall.

Quarterback Jeff George was fined $4,000 by the Indianapolis Colts for missing the opening day of training camp and will be fined $4,000 for each day he misses, the club said.
