The return of Todd Worrell means that Jim Gott, who has filled in as the closer for nearly the entire first half, moves to the setup role. Gott was impressive in the closer role, compiling a 2.09 earned-run average with 16 saves, the most saves by a Dodger in a season since 1989, when Jay Howell had 28, a club record.

Gott said he is glad Worrell is back, because it will make the bullpen stronger.

“Had Worrell’s role not been decided and then he came in and took the closer position, maybe I would have a different reaction,” said Gott, who saved 34 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1988. “But I think this is wonderful. This helps us get rings, pennants.”

To make room for Worrell and Jody Reed, who were reinstated from the disabled list Thursday, the Dodgers optioned outfielder Tom Goodwin to Albuquerque and designated right-hand pitcher Rod Nichols (0-1, 5.68 ERA) for assignment.

Orel Hershiser is batting .342 (13 for 38), with six runs scored and has struck out only five times. . . . Albuquerque’s Bill Russell managed the National League triple-A team to a 14-3 victory over the American League Wednesday. Duke outfielder Billy Ashley, who was two for three with a run batted in, was one of three most valuable players.
