For swimwear companies, this year’s suits are old news. They’re gearing up for ’94.

While you’re still working on this year’s tan lines, swimwear manufacturers are already showing what you’ll be wearing next summer. The industry group ISAM (International Swimwear Activewear Market) kicked off the 1994 season with a fashion show at the California Mart on Monday.

To sum it up, the newest looks for next year could have been done by interior designers. Fabrics resembled dark Persian rugs, marbleized floors, tiny floral tapestries and gold leaf. One woven natural-fiber maillot even approximated a sisal rug.

The prettiest suits, the new pool-ready stretch velvets and velours, inspired nostalgia in aquatic-film-star-turned-design-diva Esther Williams, who sat in front row.

Said Williams: “I remember wearing a black velvet suit in ‘Duchess of Idaho.’ We didn’t have Lycra back then, so it was all shirred across the back. I look at the fabrics today that are so light and comfortable and I think, ‘Where were you guys when I needed you?’ ”
