Motorola to Build Computer Chip Plant: The new laboratory and wafer fabrication facility will be built in Austin, Tex., in response to worldwide demand for its semiconductor products, the company said. The $850-million to $1-billion plant, expected to create 700 new permanent positions in 1995, is the second phase of a 1991 development plan the company submitted to the Austin City Council. With 90,000 square feet of clean-room space, the plant will be 15% larger than the company’s MOS-11 wafer fabrication facility at its Oak Hill campus in southwest Austin.
