MALIBU : 3.5 Offshore Quake Shakes Coastal Area

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake, centered offshore, four miles southwest of Malibu, shook a coastal area at 2:29 p.m. Monday, Caltech seismologists said. There were no reports of damage or injury.

Although the temblor was mild, it was the strongest quake to be centered within the Los Angeles area in more than a year.

In May, a scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey described the Los Angeles Basin as in a seismically “quiet period” similar to one about 10 years ago.
