VENTURA : Sidewalk Dining Law to Be Considered

If city leaders approve, Ventura diners may soon eat their meals a few feet from passing cars while their food is scrutinized by pedestrians.

The Ventura Planning Commission today will consider a proposed law that would permit restaurant owners to seat customers around tables on public sidewalks.

“It’s a recognition that, not withstanding the fog, we have a very nice climate,” said Ventura senior planner Mark Stephens. “This would create a kind of nice street ambience.”

Under the proposal, restaurant owners would pay $50 to apply for a permit for sidewalk dining. The permit would be issued if there were at least a four-foot distance between the table and the curb, and if restaurant owners meet minimum appearance standards.
