Evans Bests Barcelona Time in 800
In typically dominant style and with resurging speed, Janet Evans won her 34th national title Monday at the U.S. Swimming national championships in Austin, Tex.
Evans, 22, of Trojan Swim Club won the 800-meter freestyle in 8 minutes 23.61 seconds, 1.9 seconds faster than her gold-medal swim in the Olympics and 0.02 seconds off her 1988 pool record.
Trina Jackson, 16, of Bolles Sharks was second in 8:34.57 and Alexis Larsen, 16, of Pacific Palisades third in 8:37.49.
Peter Wright, 20, of the Jersey Wahoos won the men’s race in 7:58.90. Carlton Bruner of Florida Aquatics was second in 8:00.32 and Chad Carvin, a 1992 Laguna Hills High graduate, third in 8:02.28.
