Job Injuries Strike 1 in 15 Workers Yearly: The injuries were recorded in a 1988 federal health survey released Tuesday. Of the 44,233 adults included, back and hand injuries were among the most common problems. The National Center for Health Statistics also said that almost one in five workers suffered a week or more of back pain in the previous year, and 22% had trouble with their hands, including carpal tunnel syndrome. Unlike past government surveys, this one analyzed workplace injuries by age, sex, race and education, not just by industry. “The results can help business, labor and government keep all of America’s workers out of harm’s way and can further American productivity,” said Dr. Philip R. Lee, Health and Human Services assistant secretary for health.
