PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Rocket Not a Raider Yet

So where is the Rocket?

Two years after he was drafted by the Raiders, four months after Toronto Argonaut owner Bruce McNall wished him luck elsewhere, more than a month after the Argonauts began training camp without him, and 2 1/2 weeks after the Raiders began camp, there is still no sign of Raghib (Rocket) Ismail, the flashy pass catcher/kick returner.

Negotiations between Bob Woolf, Ismail’s agent, and Steve Ortmayer, the Raiders’ director of football operations, are stalled.

Woolf is in Los Angeles this week to attend to several matters. But Ismail does not figure to be one of them, because Ortmayer is here with the team in Austin, where the Raiders are practicing twice a day against the Dallas Cowboys three days this week. Ismail remains in Pennsylvania, where he is working out daily.

Ismail was expected to sign for about $3 million over two years, but the Raiders have not indicated they would be willing to accept that figure.

“We’re talking, they’re talking,” Ortmayer said. “It’s just that the talks haven’t reached fruition.”

Raider owner Al Davis laughed off the idea of the Raiders moving their training facility from Oxnard to San Marcos, Tex. According to the Austin American-Statesman, officials from San Marcos are attempting to lure the Raiders to the city, which is 20 miles south of Austin. Said Davis: “I’ll have (Cowboy owner) Jerry Jones check out the real estate for me.” . . . Quarterback Vince Evans and offensive tackle Steve Wisniewski were both sidelined Tuesday because of flu. . . . The Raiders cut free-agent linebacker Alitate Tuineau of Washington State and signed linebacker Brian Jones, a 1991 Raider draftee who was cut later that year.
