A former El Monte parks and recreation commissioner has been charged with molesting a 6-year-old girl for whom his wife was baby-sitting, authorities said.

Luis Ortiz, 68, was being held on $300,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty last Thursday to six counts of child molestation. A preliminary hearing has been set for Wednesday.

Ortiz, who resigned from the Parks and Recreation Commission two weeks ago, saying it was for unrelated reasons, surrendered to police last Thursday after a warrant was issued, according to El Monte Police Lt. Ken Jeske. Ortiz served on the Property Maintenance Commission from 1988 to January, 1992, when he was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission. He had also been a member of the board of directors of Pony Colt Baseball, a local baseball league for children between 13 and 16.
