POMONA : Man Gets 12 Years for Role in Robbery, Chase
One of two suspects who shot a Pomona police officer March 11, sparking a televised, high-speed chase through four counties, has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison.
Jesus Ochoa Garcia, 28, pleaded guilty this week in Pomona Superior Court to robbery and use of a gun. He was sentenced to state prison, including a year for having a prior conviction.
The charges arose from a home invasion robbery that went awry in Pomona and resulted in the wounding of Officer Roger Mathews. Because Garcia was caught a few blocks away before Mathews was shot, attempted murder charges against him were dropped.
Garcia’s suspected accomplice, Regino De Haro Jr., 21, of Santa Ana allegedly fled the scene in a station wagon, drove to Ontario and commandeered a pickup truck. He forced the owner to drive him on a circuitous route until he was arrested after bailing out at a cul de sac in Santa Ana. De Haro is awaiting a trial date.
