A Colquitt County, Ga., inmate only days away from his parole date will remain in prison after being identified as the suspect in the 1988 slaying of a Los Angeles disc jockey.
Franklin Legrand Perkins, 36, who was serving a five-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon, was to be released Tuesday.
Disc jockey Lee Selwyn, 26, was killed Oct. 8, 1988. His death resulted in a concert benefit featuring rock stars Billy Idol and Julian Lennon. Friends and family raised $12,000 in reward money for an arrest and conviction in the case.
Perkins is accused of deliberately crashing his truck into Selwyn’s motorcycle after chasing him at speeds above 100 m.p.h. A composite sketch was made of the suspect by a cartoonist who witnessed the killing.
Authorities said they began receiving tips linking the suspect to the Moultrie area after a 1989 episode of the television show “Unsolved Mysteries.”
