GLENDALE : 5 City Employees Get Layoff Notices
At least five city employees in Glendale have received final layoff notices, and one of them has filed an appeal, officials said Thursday.
“The city did everything it could” to keep layoffs to a minimum, said Richard D. Jouroyan, chairman of the city’s Civil Service Commission.
John F. Hoffman, city director of personnel and employee relations, said the expected layoffs include two building inspectors, a custodian, a data systems administrator and an auditorium specialist responsible for maintenance and lighting.
The layoffs will become effective Saturday, and the five employees will officially be taken off the payroll Sunday, Hoffman said. Those who received layoff notices had until Wednesday to file an appeal with the commission, which makes final decisions on employee matters.
The one employee who did so will have a hearing Aug. 11.
In addition to layoffs, four employees were transferred to other departments. But their salaries remained the same, Hoffman said. The transfers were based on seniority and also played a role in who was laid off, he said.
The city is trimming $8 million in spending to balance the 1993-94 budget.
