Car Flips; 2 Van Nuys Men Killed
NORTH HILLS — Two Van Nuys men were killed early Thursday in North Hills when the car they were in went out of control while apparently speeding through a curve, then flipped several times and ejected them, Los Angeles police said.
Sgt. Mel Cunningham said Carlos Lopez Valenzo, 21, was driving south on Van Nuys Boulevard near Vesper Avenue about 1:30 a.m. when he lost control of the car. It struck the curb and a power pole, then overturned several times and burst into flames.
Cunningham said Valenzo and his passenger, Gavino Acosta Maciel, 23, were ejected and killed.
Cunningham said there were no witnesses to the accident but that nearby residents reported hearing the car accelerating moments before the crash. He said skid marks on the road also indicated that the car had been traveling at a high rate of speed.
