PGA Rookie Bradley Leads at Memphis
Tour newcomer Michael Bradley shot a bogey-free, seven-under-par 64 Thursday for a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the St. Jude Classic golf tournament at Memphis, Tenn.
Defending champion Jay Haas and Davis Love III each shot 65, and Scott Gump, Michael Allen and Neal Lancaster shot 66s.
Bradley joined the tour this year and has missed the cut in three of his last five tournaments.

Vicki Goetze shot a four-under-par 68 to tie Trish Johnson for the first-round lead in the LPGA’s Ping-Welch’s Championship at Canton, Mass.
Johnson, of Wales, claimed a share of the lead by sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.
Nine golfers, including Pat Bradley, were at 69.

Two-time defending champion Tiger Woods won two matches to advance to the third round of the U.S. Junior Golf Championships at Portland, Ore. Woods, 17, of Cypress, beat Ryan Lavoie of Pasco, Wash., 6 and 5, and Chad Wright of Ventura, 4 and 2, on the Waverley Country Club’s 6,465-yard course.
Medalist Ted Oh, 16, of Torrance, also advanced to the third round.
Auto Racing
Veteran NASCAR driver Lake Speed will take over for the late Davey Allison at Watkins Glen in New York on Aug. 8 and will probably complete the NASCAR season in the No. 28 Ford Thunderbird, team owner Robert Yates said.
Speed, a 13-year Winston Cup veteran with one victory in 258 starts, will take the ride that Indy car driver Robby Gordon had in last week’s Diehard 500 at Talladega, Ala.
Tennis
Mary Pierce, who dropped her father as her tennis coach, said she is working with Gabriela Sabatini’s former coach. Angel Gimenez replaced Jim Pierce, who had coached his daughter since she turned pro two years ago.
Jim Pierce was banned May 28 from the women’s tour for two years because of disruptive behavior and has been ordered by a court to stay away from his daughter.
Jurisprudence
A judge declared a mistrial in a civil lawsuit against San Antonio Spur guard Willie Anderson by a woman who claims he raped her.
Anderson, who never was charged with a crime, was being sued for $1.2 million in actual and punitive damages.
Texas District Judge Charles Gonzalez declared the mistrial after defense attorney Jack Paul Leon made the request and the plaintiff’s attorney agreed.
The 23-year-old woman who filed the suit said Anderson raped her after she passed out at a hotel party last summer.
The ringleader of a college sports-betting operation that took in hundreds of thousands of dollars in wagers will not serve any jail time under a plea agreement with Rhode Island prosecutors.
Matthew Zimmerman, 22, of Mattapoisett, Mass., pleaded no contest to one count of organized gambling and one count of conspiracy to conduct organized criminal gambling, under the agreement announced by Attorney General Jeff Pine.
Zimmerman was given a one-year suspended sentence and three years’ probation.
Miscellany
U.S. Soccer has released Bruce Murray from the national team to allow him to pursue a professional career in Europe. Murray, 27, is the team’s all-time leader in games, with 92, and goals, with 21. . . . Eddie Jones of Temple scored 18 points, pacing the United States to an 82-56 rout of Australia and into the semifinals of the Under-22 World Basketball Championships at Valladolid, Spain. . . . The 3,000-mile Race Across America will start today at 10 a.m. from the Irvine Holiday Inn. Bicyclists will be racing to Savannah, Ga.

The agent and lawyer for Phoenix Sun forward Jerrod Mustaf said his client denies any involvement in the shooting death of a pregnant woman Mustaf reportedly had dated. Mustaf, 23, was questioned by police after the body of Althea Hayes, 27, was found Saturday in her Glendale, Ariz., apartment. . . . Mike Schuler and Mike Bratz, assistant coaches with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, were involved in an auto accident while traveling to a team meeting. Bratz suffered cuts and bruises. Schuler suffered two broken ribs and was hospitalized overnight at UC Davis Medical Center.
