OLYMPIC FESTIVAL / VALLEY ROUNDUP : Sincharoen Helps West Earn Bronze
SAN ANTONIO — After a decent start came a steady fade.
Gewin Sincharoen, seventh individually after the first round of men’s team gymnastics competition, finished 18th Thursday night at the Hemisfair Arena.
Sincharoen, who trains in Chatsworth, dropped gradually to 11th after the second event, then 15th, 17th and 19th after the fifth round, before moving up a notch. He finished with a score of 49.70.
Sincharoen’s team, the West, took third, good enough to earn him a bronze medal.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Gene Urcan from Chatsworth, a redshirt freshman at Cal State Northridge last season, had 16 kills to lead the West to a 6-15, 16-14, 15-11, 10-15, 15-11 victory over the South. The West is 1-2. Jon Baer and Craig Hewitt, also members of the Matadors, had nine kills and seven kills, for the South.
ARCHERY
Mike Hainline of Simi Valley won a silver medal in team competition. A team that included Justin Huish of Simi Valley and Dave Keaggy of Northridge took a bronze medal in the same event.
BASEBALL
Montclair Prep third baseman Brad Fullmer has one hit in four at-bats in three games for the West (0-3).
DIVING
Ricky Wood of Sherman Oaks stands 17th in a field of 20 after the preliminary rounds of three-meter competition. Wood has 477.57 points, far back of the leader, Mark Lenzi of Ann Arbor, Mich. (624.87).
WATER POLO
Christy Parker of Sherman Oaks scored two goals to help the West defeat the South, 5-3. The West, which has four victories and a tie, will play for the North (3-1-1) in the gold-medal match on Saturday.
