Whittle Denies Scaling Back School Chain Plan: The company said it remains committed to opening a chain of for-profit schools by 1996, denying a newspaper report that it had substantially scaled back its plans. The New York Times said several rumored investors have passed on backing the school project, and the Knoxville, Tenn.-based Whittle Communications may resort to an experimental version of it with a budget of as little as $40 million. Earlier this year, Edison Project executives said Whittle had begun seeking corporate partners, and the goal was now to raise $750 million needed to get 65 campuses in operation during the fall of 1996. The system under development is expected to incorporate the latest teaching methods and technology, while making a profit and operating at a lower cost than public schools.
